The golden ratio in web design

The golden ratio (φ ≈ 1.618) is not magic — it is a good anchor.

As a scale#

Type levels in φ or √φ steps form a harmonious ladder: 1rem base, 1.272rem, 1.618rem, 2.618rem.

As a ratio#

Columns at 1.618 : 1 feel more balanced than a plain 2 : 1 — the larger part dominates without crushing the smaller one.

As a format#

An image format of 13 : 8 (1.625) sits close to φ and is more practical than the exact ratio. Fibonacci approximations are pragmatic.
